European Space Agency: Studying the universe

Last October 24th, CESAR's team participated online from ESAC in a training course that took place in Galileo Galilei's Planetarium, located in Argentina's capital city, Buenos Aires.

The course's online frontpage

The training course started with CESAR's main promoter PhD. Javier Ventura-Traveset giving a general speech about ESA's activities, with special emphasis in the Galileo Tracking system, the Copernicus earth observation programme or ESA's Planetary Defense programme, HERA.

After Ventura-Traveset, CESAR's coordinator PhD. Michel Breitfellner showed CESAR's initiative to the audience, giving a tour through the webpage, and promoting its education tools, like the online science cases.

Maximiliano Pisano, the education unit responsible in the Argentinian Spatial Activities Commision (CONAE) presented the educative program 2Mp, along with the software "2Mp Software" both aiming to foster satelital technology and information in the educative process for both teachers and students.

"From laboratory to school: Learning about the Solar System" was IDEAN's Mauro Spagnolo ponency about a workshop in which students learn from a practical point of view our Solar System's elements and characteristics.

After a short break, the course continued with ESA's Herchel's mission manager PhD Pedro Garcia Lario, who gave an in-depth explanation about infrarred astronomy and the cold universe, and which astonishing discoveries were made using this spatial telescope, that was discontinued in 2013 after it ran out of fuel, and it will be substitued by JWST in late 2021, if everything goes as expected.

From infrarred to the much more energetic x-ray wavelenght, ESA's XMM-Newton Science Operations Manager PhD. Maria Santos explained the mission, and how X-ray space telescope XMM-Newton has helped to solve some mysteries that lurked in the energetic universe like the behaviour of black holes, hot plasma, AGN and binary and pulsating stars, among other topics.

To close the activity, JIVE's radioastronomer Cristina Garcia discussed about the posibilities of radio signals in the study of the universe, like the well-known Hidrogen Line, used to detect interaction between stelar objects that otherwise look like non relationed. Finally, she illustrated the audience about radioastronomic detection techniques using single antennas and arrays, like the VIL-2 used by CESAR in ESAC, ESO's ALMA or the future SKA (Square Kilometre Array) which will be the most powerful radiotelescope ever developed, and is currently under construction.
