ESA missions studying the Sun

Studying the Sun means observing it from many different perspectives: its surface, its atmosphere, the solar wind and the ways in which its activity affects Earth’s space environment. Over the past few decades, numerous space missions have helped to deepen our understanding of our star and its influence across the Solar System.

More than three decades of studying the Sun

Each mission adds a different piece to the solar puzzle: some study the solar wind, others observe the corona, while others investigate how the Sun’s activity affects Earth. Together, they build a more complete picture of our star and its influence on the space environment.

Ulysses

1990–2009
The Ulysses mission
  • An ESA–NASA collaboration.
  • The first mission to explore the Sun’s polar regions.
  • Objective: to study the solar wind around the Sun.

SOHO

1995–present
The SOHO mission
  • A joint ESA–NASA mission.
  • Designed to observe the Sun continuously from the L1 point.
  • One of the most successful solar missions ever launched.
  • Provides data on the solar interior, the corona and particle emissions.

Cluster II

2000–present
The Cluster II mission
  • Four satellites flying in formation to study how the solar wind interacts with Earth’s magnetosphere.
  • Although it does not observe the Sun directly, it is crucial to understanding its effects.

Proba-2

2009–present
The Proba-2 mission
  • A small satellite equipped with ultraviolet solar-observation instruments and space-weather sensors.
  • Monitors solar activity and supports the tracking of eruptive events.

Solar Orbiter

2020–present
The Solar Orbiter mission
  • One of ESA’s flagship solar missions.
  • Able to image the Sun from higher latitudes than any previous camera-carrying mission.
  • Observes the near corona and the solar surface in unprecedented detail.
  • Studies the connection between solar activity and the solar wind.

Proba-3

2024
The Proba-3 mission
  • Two satellites flying in extremely precise formation to create an artificial eclipse.
  • Its main objective is to obtain exceptionally detailed images of the Sun’s inner corona.
  • Beyond its scientific value, it marks a milestone in millimetre-precision formation-flying technology.
2026

SMILE

The exploration of the Sun and its effects on Earth continues. In May 2026, the SMILE mission was launched as a collaborative project between ESA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
