The Sun

Although the sun is only an insignificant star in our galaxy, it is the dominant object in our solar system and essential for life on Earth. A variation of only a few percent of its energy output would cause disastrous climate changes on Earth. Therefore, it is very important to observe and study the Sun and try to understand how it works.

 

THE DIFFERENTIAL ROTATION OF THE SUN AND ITS CHROMOSPHERE

 
The Sun is not a solid body, its gaseous composition allows different rotation speeds on its surface, that is, different angular velocities. This is what we call "differential rotation" and it also occur in other gaseous planets such as Jupiter or Saturn. We can use an h-alpha telescope to observe this phenomena and also learn about one of the thinnest and hottest layers of the Sun: the Chromosphere.

THE ROTATION PERIOD OF THE SUN AND THE SUNSPOT ACTIVITY

The Sun as every star is an active and dynamic object. It rotates at a very high speed that we can calculate tracking the sunspots while rotating. Using the number of sunspots we can determine how active the Sun is at that moment and estimate where in the solar cycle we are.

If we observe a transit of any space object from two different locations on Earth, we can determine the parallax and then the distance to that object.

Planets of the Solar System

In our Solar System, all planets turn around the Sun in orbits. A complete loop around the Sun is called "a revolution". Also, each of the Solar System planets performs a movement around themselves in the same direction of the revolution which is "rotation". The combination of both movements defines the duration a planetary day.

 

JUPITER AND ITS MOONS

Each of the planets in the Solar System has interesting and unique features observable through a telescope. Imaging the planets we can learn a lot about its surface, composition and size as well. However, every astronomical observation require an observation plan. This is especially important if we want to get the mass of Jupiter tracking the Galilean moons. In this Science Case, students will estimate the mass of Jupiter, and even more, the rotation of its moons and their main orbital characteristics.
